Picturing speech therapy as a child sitting at a desk drilling sounds? For most pediatric therapy, the reality looks a lot more like play โ€” purposeful play, designed around your child's goals. Here's what to expect, start to finish.

It starts with an evaluation

Before any therapy, your child has a comprehensive evaluation โ€” about an hour using standardized tools and clinical observation. The speech-language pathologist looks at how your child understands and uses language, produces sounds, and communicates socially. You leave with a clear picture: a diagnosis if appropriate, recommendations, and an individualized plan of care talked through together. For a bilingual child, the evaluation considers all the languages they use.

What a typical session looks like

Sessions are usually one-on-one and run about 30 to 60 minutes, often one to three times a week depending on your child's needs. Each session targets specific goals from the plan, but how it's done depends a lot on age.

For younger children: play-based

With toddlers and preschoolers, therapy is woven into play โ€” toys, songs, books, and games chosen to create lots of chances to practice target sounds and words. It's structured underneath (the SLP is working toward specific goals every minute) but it feels like fun to your child, which keeps them engaged and communicating.

For older kids and teens: goal-based and relevant

With school-age children and teens, sessions lean more on conversation, their own interests, and real-life, school-relevant goals โ€” being understood, organizing language, navigating social situations. Building rapport and a comfortable, no-judgment space comes first, because older kids do their best work when they feel at ease.

Your role as a parent

You're a partner, not a spectator. Thrive's approach is family-centered: the therapist shares what they're working on and gives you simple strategies to carry into everyday routines, so progress continues between sessions. Many sessions end with a quick check-in so you know what to practice. Curious what that home practice looks like? See turning playtime into speech practice at home.

In person or by telehealth

Sessions can happen in person in Deerfield Beach or by secure telehealth across Florida when that's a good fit for your child. Telehealth works well for many goals and ages; your SLP will help you decide what makes sense.

How progress is tracked

Goals are reviewed regularly and the plan is adjusted as your child grows. Progress in speech therapy is usually gradual and built on repetition โ€” there's no fixed timeline, and we won't pretend otherwise โ€” but you'll be kept in the loop on how things are going and what's next.
